CLASSIC CANAL DU MIDI CRUISE ITINERARY - Le Somail to Carcassonne

Sunday, Day 1 Le Somail
Guests are met at the **designated meeting point and transferred to Clair de Lune moored at the village of Le Somail. A champagne welcome on board as the Captain introduces you to the crew. Time for a walk or bicycle ride before your first dinner on board.

Monday, Day 2 Le Somail to Argens-Minervois
After breakfast, we cruise to Argens-Minervois, through beautiful, far reaching scenery as far as the foothills of the Pyrenees which you can admire from the sundeck. After lunch your guide takes you to the impressive village of Minerve, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1210, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. A fascinating recreation in miniature of the bloodthirsty Cathar rebellion and small museum complete this intriguing visit. On the way back to the hotel barge we visit a producer of fine Minervois wines, Domaine Massamier La Mignarde, for a private tasting. Dinner on board.

Tuesday, Day 3 Argens-Minervois to Puicheric
After breakfast, we drive you to the beautiful city of Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy the Archbishop's Palace and Horreum. Explore the indoor market at the hub of this bustling town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere. On your return to the hotel barge, we serve an aperitif and al fresco lunch under the trees, before a relaxing afternoon cruise through five locks to Puicheric. Dinner on board.

Wednesday, Day 4 Puicheric to Millegrand
Morning cruise to Millegrand, a perfect opportunity for walking or cycling along the towpath, or just lying back in the spa pool and enjoying the day. Lunch is prepared by your chef, before leaving with your guide to the medieval village of Lagrasse. It is one of the most beautiful villages in France, with an 8th century Benedictine abbey and many skilled artisans workshops located amongst the narrow, winding streets. Then enjoy a wine tasting at Chateau Villemagne, an established family-run domaine producing distinctive Corbieres and other wines. Dinner ashore at an excellent local auberge.

Thursday, Day 5 Millegrand to Villedubert
Morning cruise to our mooring at the lock near the village of Villedubert. After lunch we leave the barge and drive to the picturesque hilltop village of Montolieu, known as the 'Village of Books', with its many antiquarian bookshops and art exhibitions. You can visit the museum and be charmed by this medieval town, then return to the barge, visiting the 12th century Cistercian Abbaye de Villelongue on the way. Dinner on board.

Friday, Day 6 Villedubert to Carcassonne
This morning we cruise to our final destination and one of the highlights of the week, Carcassonne. After lunch aboard, your guide will accompany you to the restored and most complete medieval fortified city in existence today, dating back to the Gallo Roman era. With its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, it resisted the many armies that tried to storm this Camelot setting. You can walk the ramparts, visit the Chateau Comtal, and step back in time. Captain's Dinner on board.

Saturday, Day 7 Carcassonne
After breakfast, depart the barge by minibus and transfer to the **designated drop off point.

On alternate weeks the cruise will be in the reverse direction. This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.

**The designated meeting and drop off point is Beziers. Other options are available for charter groups

Sunday, Day 1 Carcassonne
Guests are met at the **designated meeting point and transferred to Clair de Lune moored at the port of Carcassonne. A champagne welcome on board as the Captain introduces you to the crew. Time for a walk or bicycle ride before your first dinner on board.

Monday, Day 2 Carcassonne to Villedubert
After breakfast, we cruise to Villedubert and moor at the edge of the lock. Transfer after lunch to the largest and most beautiful walled city of Europe, Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo-Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today with its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, which resisted the many armies that tried to storm this glorious Camelot setting. Dinner on board.

Tuesday, Day 3 Villedubert to Millegrand
After breakfast we leave Villedubert and cruise along the beautiful Canal du Midi shaded by trees to Millegrand. After lunch we transfer to the village of Montolieu, known for its books and graphic arts. We visit the museum and enjoy the charm of this medieval town and visit Villelongue Abbey. Dinner on board.

Wednesday, Day 4 Millegrand to Puicheric
We cruise today through four locks to Puicheric. Lots of opportunity to cycle or walk or just sit in the spa pool and watch the world go by. After lunch we transfer to the village of Lagrasse, with its Benedictine Abbey and narrow streets. We enjoy a wine tasting at Chateau Villemagne. Tonight, dinner ashore at a local auberge.

Thursday, Day 5 Puicheric to Argens
This morning's excursion is to Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. Enjoy a visit to the Archbishop's Palace and Horreum. Explore the indoor market at the hub of this bustling canal side town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the relaxed atmosphere. Return to the barge and enjoy lunch under the trees. This afternoon, a relaxing pace as we continue cruise, through five locks, to Argens. Dinner on board.

Friday, Day 6 Argens to Le Somail
This morning we cruise to Le Somail, through stunning countryside. After lunch we transfer to the beautiful city of Minerve, the ancient capital of the Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1215, its hilltop location affords spectacular views. A fascinating recreation in miniature of the bloodthirsty Cathar rebellion and small museum complete this intriguing picture. Return to the barge for the Captains Farewell Dinner on board.

Saturday, Day 7 Le Somail
After breakfast, depart the barge by minibus and transfer to the **designated drop off point.

On alternate weeks the cruise will be in the reverse direction. This is a sample itinerary and is subject to change.
