DAY TO DAY CRUISE PROGRAM FROM PASSAU - BUDAPEST - PASSAU

Day 1
Embarkation on the vessel in Passau, the city where three rivers meet. The ship leaves port in the afternoon and takes you through a lovely stretch of the Danube known as the Schloegener Schlinge. After these first scenic impressions of the Danube, our cruise director will welcome you with a cocktail before the official welcome dinner.

Day 2
At midday, the vessel reaches Vienna, a city of music and joie de vivre whose specialities of Sachertorte and Heuriger (new wine) are just as famous as St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Imperial Palace. You can see Vienna's most important sights on our sightseeing tour or explore this historic city on your own. Or you could join our guided bike tour through the heart of Vienna, exploring Austria's capital and seeing its impressive sights by bike. The ship leaves Vienna early in the evening and heads downstream towards Budapest.

Day 3
You reach Budapest, the capital of Hungary, at lunchtime. Budapest is a city made up of two parts - Buda and Pest, built on opposite banks of the Danube. With its cobbled streets and medieval architecture, Buda is the older and more graceful part, while Pest, with its wide avenues and impressive 19th-century public buildings, is the administrative and commercial centre. East meets West in this fascinating city, which has an amazing variety of shops and restaurants. This afternoon, there'll be a city sightseeing tour , or you can look around Budapest at your own pace. After dinner on board, a gypsy band and a Hungarian folklore group will entertain you while we ply up and down viewing Budapest's impressive illuminations, before slipping away downstream, towards Kalocsa, later in the evening

Day 4

Day 5
In the morning you'll be back in Budapest. Having already seen something of the Hungarian capital on the city tour on your first arrival there, you are now free either to explore the city further on your own or join our excursion to the 18 th -century castle Godollo, which is located about 30 km from Budapest. During the imperial monarchy the castle was closely associated with Empress Elisabeth, who was nick-named 'Sissi' and much loved by the Hungarians. Nestling in an enormous park, this is Hungary's largest complex of Baroque buildings . You can see round its attractive rooms, which have been carefully restored in recent years, and also see the former stables. After an early lunch, the vessel leaves Budapest without those passengers who have booked the shore excursion to Szentendre and Esztergom. This excursion follows the bank of the Danube to the small artist's village of Szentendre, which is seen on foot. The drive continues up to the imposing ruins of Visegrad, from which there is a magnificent view of the 'knee' of the Danube, and on to Esztergom, the highlight of this tour. This town is dominated by the country's largest neoclassical (1820) basilica and one of the largest churches in Europe. After seeing round it, there'll be a wine tasting session before rejoining the vessel, which has meanwhile come upstream from Budapest. During dinner the vessel continues upstream to Bratislava.

Day 6
In the morning the ship reaches the city of Bratislava, which was founded over 2,000 years ago. Now the capital of Slovakia, it was the capital of Hungary for a while during the late Middle Ages, which is a good illustration of how the chequered histories of these central European countries were intertwined. A sightseeing tour will cover the city's major sights, including breathtaking views from Bratislava's 13th-century castle over countryside where the frontiers of Austria, Hungary and Slovakia meet. The ship sets off for Vienna shortly before lunch. On this penultimate evening of your Danube cruise, the ship's captain will welcome you to a special dinner, during which the vessel docks back in Austria's capital again. You'll have the choice of taking our Vienna by Night excursion or attending a Vienna Mozart Concert (subject to availability). The first takes you through the Wienerwald up to the Kahlenberg, Vienna's best viewpoint, with view of the city over vineyards, and continues to the traditional wine village of Grinzing, where you visit a typical Heurigen (new wine) pub. The Vienna Mozart Orchestra concert features internationally renowned singers and soloists all attired in magnificent historical costumes and wigs - who create a special atmosphere and recreate an authentic Baroque era concert.

Day 7

This morning the ship docks at the wine-growing town of Melk/Emmersdorf, at the western end of the Wachau district. A coach excursion takes you through more of the beautiful Wachau area , followed by a guided tour of the Benedictine Abbey of Melk. This excursion also includes a wine tasting. Alternatively you could join our guided bike tour. The lovely and varied scenery along the Danube Cycle Route is at its best when seen from the saddle, with this excursion's views of the Wachau district's vineyards and lush meadows being particularly enjoyable. The ship leaves Emmersdorf after lunch and continues upstream towards Germany.

Day 8
The vessel arrives at Passau, the town where the rivers meet. Disembarkation after breakfast. End of the program.
