THE MEKONG RIVER CRUISE
There
can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied
as the River Mekong. Indeed there can be no
more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling
Vietnam delta and the tranquility of
Cambodia. We pass from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon,
now called Ho Chi Minh City, through
the vast Delta so rich in human life and endeavor, to travel
along the main channel into the rich countryside
of Cambodia.

VISAS:
THE COST OF ANY VISA IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE PRICE OF THE CRUISE
VIETNAM
You need a visa for Vietnam.
These are valid for 30 days and cost around US$60. They are best
obtained from a Vietnam embassy or
consulate abroad.
Travelers may also obtain a visa upon arrival at Ho Chi Minh airport.
However, our representative or your
travel agent will need personal data for applying visa approval
first. Experience has shown this is not 100%
reliable and expects delays.
Note that Vietnam visa on arrival cannot be issued
on the river border entering from Cambodia.
If entering Vietnam from Cambodia you should state that the entry
date for arrival in Vietnam is the
day you arrive in Cambodia. A wrong entry date can result in a
24 hour delay for the ship and a fine.
CAMBODIA
Upstream (from Vietnam) Passengers can obtain the Cambodian visa
upon arrival at the border Vietnam /
Cambodia on the Mekong River by paying US$25 net per person added
to room bill.
Two photos per person are required.
Downstream (from Siem Reap) Passengers can obtain the Cambodian
visa upon arrival at Siem Reap
airport by paying US$20 net per person directly on the spot.
Daily Schedule
A printed daily program for the following day will be put in your
cabin during dinner time every evening.
Please keep an eye on the notice board for any subsequent notice
of any changes to the daily schedule.
Dress Code
The atmosphere on board is informal and relaxed. During the day,
comfortable & casual attire is
appropriate. The evenings are smart-casual.
Excursions
When moored you are welcome to come and go from the ship as much
as you like. Our next sailing time
will be advised on the daily schedule and passengers are requested
to note this before disembarkation.
Group shore excursions are organized by the Purser and you will
be accompanied by a member of the
ship's company. Details of these are posted on the daily schedule.
Fifteen minutes prior to casting off the
captain will sound the ship's horn to warn you to return to the
ship. Passengers should hang their keys on
the key board on the main deck when disembarking so that we know
if anyone has not returned. If you go
ashore with your cabin keys and we leave without you we cannot
be held responsible for this.
Gratuities
The price of a ticket includes all gratuities and passengers are
not expected to tip staff individually or
collectively. We have calculated $5 per passenger per day to be
added to crew salaries as an end of a
month bonus subject to passenger satisfaction.
Guides
All guides services are in the English language. Guides in other
languages may be supplied by special
arrangement at additional cost which may include using guest accommodation
at guest rates.
Food Safety and Hygiene
Bottled water is used for cooking and food preparation onboard.
Off the vessel never accept ice in drinks
and avoid ice creams, crushed sugar cane, salads and the skins
of fruits.
Footwear
Slippers are provided for your comfort on board the vessel. When
ashore guests should wear comfortable
but safe walking shoes. At certain times the river banks and paths
used can be muddy and therefore
slippery or very dusty and we ask you to remove your footwear when
returning on board so that we can
clean your shoes for you and return them to you later.
Meals
Breakfast and lunch are cold buffets and à la carte menu. Dinner is
served
at the tables with a table
d'hôte selection of dishes. We offer a mixture of Asian and Western cuisine
and there are always
vegetarian dishes offered. Special diets may be catered for with advance notification.
River Conditions Warning!
The rivers you will sail
on are subject to seasonal rises and falls of water level, in some
places as much as 30 metres. Water
levels can change dramatically overnight and a sudden rise can
impede our progress upstream considerably and even prevent us from
passing under certain bridges. A sudden fall can result in our
being unable to get into certain places or go as far upstream as
we would hope. Groundings on sandbars are not infrequent and are
part of the excitement of any Pandaw expedition. Published itineraries
are indicational only and subject to sudden change. In such events
alternative itineraries will be provided and we do our best to
ensure that if a stop is missed we make up for it with another
stop. Passengers are thus forewarned and expected to be flexible
and patient. River cruising in Asia can be a dramatic and adventurous
experience - not like cruising the controlled waterways of Europe
or America. Note also that we operate in areas with little or no
developed infrastructure and subject to the strictures of local
officialdom. Be prepared for this and it is all more the fun!
